Interested In Market Research/analyst Career

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi All,

I was hoping you could provide me with some feedback. I am currently a stay-at-home mom who is interested in a market research/analyst career.

I was hoping you could provide me with info on how to get there :)

I have a B.S degree in Computer Science with 5yrs work experience (before kids) and now I am working on B.A in Business Administration. I also have recently started volunteering with non-profits in the public relations/marketing area. (I plan on going back to work in a few years once my youngest one is in school)

Does this sound like a good plan to break into market research. I feel that my degree in Computer Science should be an asset since it shows I have analytical skills...and I will have a general business background once I am done with the Business Admin program.

Please let me know if my plan to get into market research/analyst is a good one or if there are other options I should be considering.

Thanks!
Naema

I'd suggest you talk with a few individuals who currently do what you are planning to do.

I'm not sure how you get started in market research just based on computer/technical skills and a business or marketing degree. Those are necessary, of course, but they're far from sufficient. What you really need is something like an internship in market research to see if that's really what you want to do and to gain a little hands-on experience.

You might also consider becoming an analytics specialist -- both web and other applications. It's a specialized area within market research, and it involves more of an operations research/management science approach.

Best bet: find a few people who have done what you want to do and ask them the important questions.
