Demographics Data Append/overlay

Posted by Dane Robbins on 250 Points
Perhaps E-Marketing is not the best forum for this question, yet it is related in how we plan to use the information at some point in the future. I have a travel client with a small customer base of highly affluent customers. Until now, the client has not made a great deal of effort to understand the demographics of their audience for target marketing efforts. Other than Experian, can anyone recommend a reliable service to overlay basic demographic information onto an existing list of customers? Eventually this client will work with an Experian type company to develop a model for list selection and future mailings. For now, they are just wanting to quickly append the demographics data to their list for work with another partner. A Google search has turned up a million hits for such append/overlay services. Many of them are e-mail appending services, which I'm not interested and not a big fan. I'm looking for traditional demographics overlays. Can anybody suggest a company who they've worked with in the past and could recommend for such an effort?

We have worked with Worldata - while we worked heavily with them on appending emails. We have had a few successful projects with their DB services.

Could I just ask you what your client wants to achieve with this exercise?

For example, were they to want to analyse their mailing and email lists by comparing them against a geographical socio-economic set of data, the you can do it in a spreadsheet using pivot table and matching zip-codes.

Rather than reinvent to wheel, take a look at Tableau Software who have made quite a name for themselves in providing strong visual analysis of data sets in 2, 3 and n dimensional pivot structures.

If what you have in mind is a similar exercise then they or more likely one of their users to whom they could refer you to could show you how to squeeze data from a mailing list and a good old A,B,C, 1,2,3 socioeconomic geographical demographic list.

There’s not much point in re-inventing the wheel unless you are very strong in the construction of pivot tables and can access the socio-economic data. Look up socio economic data Zip code analysis on Google and you’ll find your appropriate matching data. Ask tableau and you’ll get either the tool to turn the data into information or a reference to a client of theirs who already does this sort of task using Tableau.
