Move From B2c To B2b

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
I have 8 years in consumer marketing at two powerhouse brand CPG companies. As I look ahead the road to higher positions is extremely steep. There seems to be more career opportunities in B2B and more of an opportunity for global marketing. Am I limiting my own "marketability" by staying in consumer? Is moving to B2B a good way to accelerate my career?

I'm not sure if B2B is more profitable than B2C, but I think you may have answered your own question. I may be off the mark, but it seems to me that as you've been exploring opportunities (whether you're actively looking for a new job or just seeing what's out there), you've noticed that many of the types of positions you think sound like a fit are B2B opportunities. I'm not saying you're less marketable as B2C, but having a solid background in both can only make you more marketable. And if you feel like a B2C focus is limiting your options, then perhaps it's time for a change.

As a freelance copywriter, I do both B2B and B2C jobs. I won't lie. The B2B jobs put food on the table. But I also find the B2C jobs more personally fulfilling. For me, at least, it seems that B2B companies have a greater understanding of when and why they need my services (note: I have a small to medium business focus), so it's easier for me to get a foot in the door and far less work on my part developing a relationship and making sure jobs keep coming.

I don't know if doing both is an option for you, but it seems to me that you should focus on what will get you where you want to be (both on a professional and personal level).

I agree with HireHeather - I also am not sure about whether B2B would have more opportunities than B2C.

But, I am not sure I agree that you would be more marketable having both B2B and B2C background. That depends on the function you do/want to do. Those functions that are very industry specific (like marketing or product management) are not transferable. And some B2C functions, like market research, are not really done to anywhere near the same level in B2B.

If growth opportunities are what you are after, you may want to consider moving to a smaller B2C firm, or a smaller division within a larger B2C firm.

Large companies often compartmentalize their functions very effectively, so you only get to focus on your little world. And they usually grow slowly, so new positions don't always open up.

Small companies never have enough people, so everyone has many roles. And they can grow faster, opening up new opportunities. And you can look for one that does a lot of international work or has other attributes which appeal to you.

Downside is that you lose some of the perks of large companies - often the benefits are not as good and you have to be economical when traveling (no more business class, if you get that).
