Edging Past My Competitor

I'm in the process of developing a new product and realise that there is a competitor also developing a similar product. In what ways can i edge past this competitor in terms of the the marketing mix?

    Be first.
    Tie the product to a specific (narrow) niche.
    Have a story about why the product is the "perfect solution" to a problem you saw.
    Identify people who need the product to solve a problem in their life (and are willing to pay for it) now.
    Identify influencers in the community who would benefit from it.
