Negotiating An Offer Letter

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
Hello,

I am hoping to get some feedback on my current dilemma. I recently received an offer letter for a Marketing Manager position. I am very happy with the offer however am wondering if I should counter offer. I did some research online for my job title and location and found that the average marketing manager is making approx $11,000 more than the offer I received. In addition, I need to cover my own parking expenses because the company does not have a parking garage. Based on this information, should I counter offer? Do companies automatically assume the person will negotiate the offer?

Also, I currently have 4 weeks paid vacation and this company is only offering me 2 weeks with a third week after 5 years of employment. I would like to ask for a third week after a year of employment.

Can anyone give me some advice as to whether it is appropriate to negotiate all of this and is there any down side to doing so, as I wouldn't want them to retract their offer.

Thanks in advance.

    Some thoughts...

I don't know how much the offer is, but you need to consider what % of the total the $11K represents. This is a tricky area. If it represents, say 10% of the total and you want the job, I wouldn't make an issue of it. If it represents a SUBSTANTIAL %, you need to tread lightly.

Parking? What dollar value do you place on this? Is it really an issue?

If this firm is anywhere approaching sophisticated, their vacation times are going to be laid out in their employee manual and applicable to ALL employees. I wouldn't look for them to make an exception for you.

    Good luck !
