How To Stay Involved With The Marketing World

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have now been out of college for about a year and a half and work as an assistant manager for a large retailer. I often reflect back on how hard I tried to set myself apart in college in order to get a position in the general field of marketing, all the while, fighting the stereotypical recent graduate feelings of entitlement. I am excited to get out on my own and gain valuable management experience, but I want to make sure I don’t keyhole myself into retail. How do keep updated and network with the marketing world, while keeping my job for stability?

hi - I think my using sites like this one and linkedin.com, using the internet - staying current with what's happening - there's allot of publications about marketing - epublications you can get in your email at home that could keep you in the loop with all the current information about social marketing and anything else that will be the next big thing.

    Dear Summer,

How do you keep updated and network with the marketing world, while keeping your job for stability?

Use social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

Start a blog and post original, relevant, fresh content at least
once a week. Use PowerPoint or Apple's Keynote and a cheap but decent microphone to create video content that you then post to YouTube and other video sites. Link these to your blog and social media accounts.

The key here is to create visibility for your opinions, thoughts,
and experience in marketing. If necessary, post under a Website name. Keep all your content AWAY from any aspect of your current job and post NOTHING that links to your existing employment.

Join this forum and answer questions. Post responses to other issues on other marketing blogs and link those posts back to your social media or blog presence.

I started posting to this forum less than a year ago and I'm now in the top 25.

On your blog, offer something of value in exchange for reader
e-mail addresses. Build a list and talk to the people on that list about things that are important to them and do this at least monthly (I send out a short newsletter every week to a small but growing list, You can find out more here: https://garybloomer.tumblr.com/ )

As you can see, my blog is nothing fancy. But it's currently read by people on five different continents. It's NOT about the website, it's about the quality of the content.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.
