Marketing For A Catering Company Salary

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I recently was hired by a catering company as their primary marketing coordinator. The owner asked me what I wanted my salary to be and I'm having a difficult time deciding based on time/duties/experience, etc. The business is only 3 months old but I don't want to allow affect my decision. I want to make base + comission but am having trouble deciding what is "fair". Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

"Fair" is about halfway between what you think you're worth and what they think you're worth. And if those two numbers are not close, then you have a bigger problem than figuring out what "fair" might be.

Also consider that salaries vary based on location. You would expect less if you are in Bangalore or Manila than if you are in London or Paris. (Or New York vs. Ames, Iowa.)

Also it's not clear what the job really is. Are you a sales rep AND a marketing coordinator? If not, then you probably shouldn't get (or want) a commission based on sales. Generally, the person who closes a sale is the only one who gets the commission.

    Hope this helps.

    Here's a possible approach:

You write on a piece of paper the least you'd take to do the job. The owner writes the most they'd pay.

If your number is higher than the owner's, the negotiation is over and you don't have a deal.

If the owner's number is higher than yours, then you agree in advance that the salary will be exactly halfway between your two numbers.

    Does that sound fair?

Are you saying you were hired without knowing the pay? If it's a good business plan they will have already set a salary for this position.

Are you marketing or really sales? Sounds more like sales.

Commission: 12% on new business and 10% on repeat business.

    Where are you located?
