Is It Possible To Collect Information About Birthdays?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points

The article from July 1 claims that birthdays e-mail generate more revenue. My e-commerce company is new. I would like to collect from my customers information about their birthdays (day and month of the birth no year) to offer them discount gifts. I was told by employees of brick and mortars stores that people do not like to give such personal information and if I will ask such information from visitors of my web site I will alienate potential customers.
Do some participants of this forum have any experience with collecting such information? Can you give me please your suggestions how to approach this issue?

I haven't had an issue with this, but it seems month/year would be better. Why lump 8-yo's with 80-yo's.

The more information you ask initially, the less likely people will be willing to complete it. If you make the information optional, and explain the benefit to the prospect, then you allow them the opportunity to opt-in with this information should they wish.

If you're already sending promotional emails to your customer list, you could start including a link that says "Join Our Birthday Club! Check out the benefits."

That link could send them to a landing page that tells them about the benefits (discounts, a free... whatever). And you should display a sign-up form that allows them to input their own birthday AND other important dates -- friend/relative birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Then you will have a reason to send them special offers before those events.

What's the worst that can happen?
