I Need Serious Help!!

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi everyone,

I need help. Firstly, anyones that's reading this thanks for taking your time.

My problem is that I need a job and I am very very confused how to get one.

I have been freelancing for over past two years almost. Freelance has provided me the opportunity to offer a various set if services, this includes: Graphic Design, Consultation, Marketing planning, Web development. I must have arrived around 20+ clients over this period. My work is OK compared to other designers, I mean Imy work can only be as good as my last project.

I have never worked for anyone in my life except for my clients, where I am my own boss. And I honestly love it that way. I am very skeptical about myself as a good designer. Over my experience of dealing with clients, I have had a lot of passion for Marketing, more than any other services I have offered to clients. I absolutely adore marketing planning.

Now here is the problem. I almost have completed my Bachelor of Digital Innovation (Multimedia), also have a Diploma in Commercial Arts (Advertising), never worked for anyone. I feel I am never good enough. And now instead of a graphic design job, I want to do Marketing job. Or abythig that could also involve both, Marketing and Design even I don't mind Web HTML/PHP as well. But I really want do Marketing irrespective. How do I go about this? I think
people will not give me a chance, the other thing is there are so many experienced people that have worked for companies unlike me, who has only worked for himself. I tried applying couple of recruitment agencies and they said we are looking for someone with studio experience. And with qualificationand experience, I can't do a Marketing job which ideally want to neither can I get a Design job because of nonstudio experience. I confused on how to approach this issue, it's too overwhelming to feel like this.

Anyone please help!! I will really appreciate it, even if youvwant to criticize me please do so, I need to learn something I don't know.

Thanks,
- Usman

things may not be as bad as they seem.

I would forget about recruitment agencies. Generally speaking, they are looking for people with very specific skills and or good contacts in a certain industry.

I would not be so quick to give up on "being your own boss." It sounds like you are enjoying what you are doing. Is there a reason you feel you need to change?

By the way, where are you located? Can you fill out your profile so that we know more about you and your situation?

It sounds like you have studied quite a bit about marketing... but maybe not so much about selling. I would suggest that you read several good books on sales. By studying sales, you can learn some specific tactics which can bring clients in the door, and these books can probably also help you develop and maintain a positive and hopeful mental attitude. Good luck.

    Dear Usman,

Have considered a marketing internship? Your school might be able to help you find one.

Intern positions let you "test-drive" the work, as well as the ins-and-outs of the corporate world. Could be a good way to answer some of your questions while continuing to build your professional network.

    Good Luck!

Usman, whatever you do if you want to start in marketing strategy you will have to start at the beginning - i.e. an internship or a junior role, regardless of what you've done before unless you set up your own agency. Companies look for people with proven track records in that area.

Suggestions from others on this thread are good - an internship is always the best way to get in. You can also try to apply for junior roles at smaller companies in your areas.
