Is It Just About Having An Mba?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have 2.3 years experience as a marketing coordinator, followed by 3 years experience as a marketing communications specialist. I would like to be considered for marketing manager or marketing communication manager positions but have noticed an MBA is preferred. Isn't 5 years experience enough to start being considered for the manager positions?

    Yes and no.

Clearly an MBA isn't really a requirement. Being technically competent, experienced, and having basic managerial skills are all more important.

But one of the things a lot of companies look for is a solid and broad understanding of what makes businesses work. They'd like to think that a marketing manager understands a little about accounting, finance, manufacturing, sales, product development, strategic planning, etc. In some cases, this broad knowledge is mandatory; in others it's just a nice extra.

And one thing an MBA can signify is that you've been exposed to business and business management basics.

Is an MBA more important than relevant experience? Probably not. But don't discount its value totally. These companies are not all crazy.
