Masters In Marketing And Business Management

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am currently thinking of pursuing a masters in marketing and business management from a university in the UK. I have an undergraduate in Commerce with a specialization in marketing and a Chartered institue of Marketing diploma. Since graduation 2 years ago i have had 3 different jobs ( yes i realise thats a high number for that duration of time),this jobs have mainly been in corporate sales. i have been searching for an opportunity as a marketing executive or assistant brand manager but this hasnt happened. I do not enjoy sales and as a result I am not vey good at it.

Kindly advise if the masters in marketing will help me get my dream job?will an employer view me as too much of an academic? I really enjoy myself when im in a marketing class discussing marketing theories.

RED FLAG: Why did you accept jobs in sales if you don't like sales? And you did it more than once? Did you not learn your lesson after the first one?

I have a concern that maybe (a) you are not really sure what you want, or (b) you are afraid to be measured on performance.

Anyone who enjoys "discussing marketing theories" probably won't make a great brand manager in an environment where you have to deliver the goods and be evaluated on your actions. Brand management is not about "discussing marketing theories."

Perhaps you should consider a career in academia. Get your masters degree and perhaps a doctorate.

mgoodman thankyou for your response.I dont think my comment on enjoying marketing theories was clear. My first job was in corporate insurance sales i took it mainly because the rate of unemployment where i live is so high I couldnt turn it down. My next Job was in a media house selling TV advertising space to advertising agencies I loved this Job and i was good at it,especially when it came to the part of analyzing the briefs and making the client proposals, presentations and reporting industry trends in the market and analysing total advertising spend . But the station laid off the entire agancy sales department and that is how i came to my third job. I searched for a job as a marketing executive for 3 months before taking on the Job i now have which is in VAS telecommunications hoping I will progress to the marketing department.I have targets and i do intend to meet them.
For all the marketing jobs I had applied for I did not get a response. I did have a plan before being laid off but yes since then I have been abit confused as to which direction to take...without appearing as if i am just aimless about my life.
And i do intend to teach one day but on a part time basis.
