Getting Book Clubs To Notice My New Book

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I have just had a new book published. Since it is self-published, it has been difficult to get the bookstores interested in stocking it. I am hoping to enlist the support of Book Clubs. I am hoping to get people interested, since the book was conceived due to curious inquiries directed toward me about what africans eat.
"What Africans Eat: Traditional Foods and Food Traditions of West Africa" was written to satisfy people's expressed curiosity.
Does anyone know how the best way to get Book Clubs interested in this kind of book, and what book clubs out there would be appropriate?
Thanks!

Well there are lots of book clubs. I would suggest you talk to the local library. Depending on the material they're pretty open to these kind of discussions.

Another option is to offer to speak about Africa in general. You can bring up your book afterwards.

You are supposed to plan your marketing strategy BEFORE you write and publish the book, not after. This is exactly what happens when you do it backward.

Getting distribution is tough, but not impossible. You need to work the bookstores one at a time and see if they'll slot you for a short presentation and signing. If you schedule an average of one a day, you'll have distribution in more than 300 outlets in the first year.

After the first year, most books go to the remainder tables and/or get returned to the publisher. There are so many new books every year that booksellers can't possibly keep everything. Most books sell 90% of what they are going to sell within the first 6-9 months. And most new books (in the United States, at least) sell fewer than 1,000 copies total/ever.

Have you created some videos of you talking about your book to help people to better understand your book's discussion points? If so, then you can send links to the video to book clubs, rather than pitching the book sale directly.
