Organic Email Marketing List Building

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
As a salesperson, what is the best way to grown an email marketing list organically (B2B)?

I've been given permission to handle some marketing activities (our small sales division does not have a marketing team), and we also have no budget for these marketing activities.

I'm using Mail Chimp, and have received permission from many clients to add them to the list, as well as several leads.

How can I continue to grow this? At this point, I cannot add a link to our website. I have used twitter with moderate success, but I'm looking for other ways as well.

Assuming we see some growth as a sales team next year, we may be able to hire a marketing person for this particular division.

Thoughts?

This is tough. You could certainly do it, but it's a function better suited to Marketing than to Sales, in my experience.

**You** don't grow the list; it is your readers who grow it. They read your stuff and think it's so great that they tell their friends, who subscribe. That's how the list grows, and most of the time it's Marketing that charts the course for doing that.

Again, it's not that you can't do it, but it's usually Marketing that is tasked with planning and generating great content, and Sales that is tasked with closing deals.

You've taken a good first step with MailChimp and getting existing customers and leads to opt in. Focus sharply on what kind of content it takes to keep them coming back, and continue to fill your newsletters with it.

You grow the list by providing incredible information that'll help your prospect's business. You don't grow the list by selling them stuff each letter. Focus on what matters to them. Interview them (and feature the interview each month). Would a video newsletter be more useful/interesting? A monthly free teleseminar for all people on your list?
