Opportunties But No Responses?!

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hello,
I'm a marketing manager that relocated from the dismal Michigan job market to Texas.
I've applied to multiple jobs where I can see being a great fit.
I'm getting no responses? Do you think it's because of the holiday season or maybe something is glaringly wrong on my resume?
I don't know if I'm being impatient or if I'm doing something wrong.

    Elaine,

Like many marketing campaigns it will take time. If there is a glaring gap in your resume it will come out soon and you should take quick action to correct it....or answer the objection.

Thank You! I'll read the potato chip book - not while eating them though =)
I'll keep plugging away, and be PATIENT

Have you considered doing an information interview for these companies? Instead of waiting for them to contact you, find out more about them. Do your research first, find someone in the organization that either is doing something that fascinates you or is doing something similar to what you're hoping to do, and ask them about the company, their job, etc.

    Elaine:

I can't tell which, if any, of the 20+ Elaine McDonalds you are on LinkedIn, but I recommend probing your network long and hard to find connections into companies you're targeting.

Even in sunny economies, every résumé has to get above a lot of noise. You can lob one in along with the cattle-call, but having a friend inside who can shepherd it is the real accelerator.

It's tougher when you're new to a geographic market, but it's still a big part of the dance.

My gut is you are being impatient, though can't say for sure as I don;t know how many you sent out, how long you waited, etc.

In this job market, any open position that is posted is getting many responses. Employers don't always have time to respond to all of them (or in some cases, read all of them).

Here is an article that covers some reasons why you may not be getting responses:

One thing to improve your odds of hearing back is to follow up. For example, a week after you apply, why not call and check in. You likely will need to research who the person it is you need to talk to get a name, which it is actually better to do before you apply and personalize your application to that person.

    Thank You Everyone,
Great advice - Yes, I admit to being impatient, I am thoroughly researching companies and adjust cover and letter accordingly.
Yes, I am following up, being a Yankee in a Southern market I'm finding it to be a delicate balancing act...
Johnwhitepaper - I'm going to have to upgrade on Linkedin to contact people on the 'inside' from your comment it looks like I should.
