Branding For Women In Martial Arts Website.

Posted by NicMcGeorge on 125 Points
Hi There!

I am in the process of developing a website / online community for women involved in combat sports (particularly MMA, Muay Thai, and Jui Jitsu). The website will serve as forum for women just getting into the sport, as well as offer up-and-coming fighters the opportunity to build fan bases and share experiences etc.

The site will feature technical sport-specific information (i.e. how-to guides to various 'moves'), informational articles on nutrition, supplementation, upcoming events, etc.

I intend to develop a line of women's fight gear as well to market through the site, so I am looking for ideas for branding - names, taglines, etc.

The target demographic is women between the ages of 20-40 who are involved in these sports at any level (beginners to professionals).

The brand should be a bit edgy, but not overly "rough".

I have a few ideas, but would love to hear your thoughts. Once I have a few I think are fitting, I'll do some test marketing to see what resonates best with my audience.

A few examples of what I've been thinking are:

Knockout.com.au -- Knockout Fight Gear -- Knockout (we make this $*** look good!)

FightChicks.com.au -- FightChicks Fight Gear

FemmeFataleFighters.com.au -- Femme Fatale Fight Gear

Any ideas / suggestions would be most appreciated!

Kind Regards,

Nix

    Knockout Divas
    Chicks Kick Butt
    Feisty Ladies
    Feisty Female Fighters
    Wonder Women Fighters
    The Mighty Femmes

...."Feisty, Fabulous and not afraid to Fight"

First, I would suggest also registering a .com site instead of just the .com.au (unless you are targetting Australia exclusively, but still...).

I think you have a great idea! I'm into martial arts myself and know that the girls I met at martial arts places are really passionate about the sport.

I like "Fight Chicks" for the name, but here are a couple other suggestions:

    - She-Fight
    - Girl-Fu
    - Mighty Women
    - Fearless Ladies
    - Girls Go Fight

Yes, I'm not very creative.. sorry! :)

As for tagline, I would try to really keep it short but explain that it's a line focusing on women (your differential), so how about:

    "Fighting gear for women"

"The Martial Arts store for ladies"

    "The women's fighting store"

    "Knock'em out in style"

I hope it gives you some food for thought! Let us know what you end up choosing.

Very edgy but this will get attention....WifeBeaters.

Incase you don't know, it is also a style of singlet or sleeveless shirt worn by both genders on the street and in gyms plus years ago by the original 'misunderstood' actor in movies, Marlon Brando.

WifeBeaters flips the concept of "Wives/Women" being victims and defenseless.

Chicks, knockout, fiesty etc still convey the sterotype of battleingbabes, mudwrestling to me.

Your answer will help me understand your goal...fitness or full impact in your face sport and style.

Male MMA clothing and gym names are very over the top also.

    Hi All,

    Thanks heaps for your input!

Norwood: Great input- I'll definitely try to register it as a .com as well - unfortunately a lot of the domain names I've checked are already taken.

NovaHammer: Interesting concept! The site will have information useful to women who are in the sports just for fun/fitness, but it's main focus will be on training for competition.

A lot of the "female-specific" names do sound very mudwrestling- which I want to steer clear from. But I don't want to put across an angry, man-hating image either.

    Tricky.

I think I'll leave the post up for another day or so, see if any other ideas come in. Otherwise I'll pick a few to test out, and I'll let everyone know the outcome!

    Cheers,

    Nix

What about something along the lines of Focus Fighters? This could be incorporated in to the navigation of the site as well e.g. forum focus, technique focus, gear focus etc.

Women will get in to the sport for various reasons, but they will all be on your site because their focus is fighting. It doesn't give the connotation of man-haters or mud wrestlers either.

    And yeah, I like alliteration.

Warrior Queen - Historically Boudica and her two daughters revenged the Roman invasion of Britain... 100 AD.

Her Celtic name is now translated as Victory or Victoria and her image has become the Iconic Image of Britain as much as Uncle Sam has become the image of the US.

    Queen Victorius

Double X chromosomes (female markers) could also provide a different angle.

XX Marks This Spot - or any spelling highlighting XX in words used.

    GoodLuck.
