What Is The Diff Betwn A Mkt Coordiantor & Speclst

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi, I am wondering what the difference is between a Marketing Coordinator and a Marketing Specialist?

I have been working for an automotive supplier as a temporary employee under the title "marketing coordinator". This is a very broad title for what I do, I wear many hats in this marketing department and I have constantly been referred to as the go-to guy. My responsibilities consist of:

• Assist with Press Events, Training Activities and Auto Shows.
• Manage and coordinate the logistics and transportation of equipment/display materials to and from marketing events.
• Develop and execute ideas for OEM websites.
• Support account managers with OEM meetings, document preparation, website analytics, sponsorship opportunities, and penetration rate data.
• Work in conjunction with other Marketing staff, Product Planning and Vehicle Operations customers to increase penetration rates.
• Assist in developing the department’s strategic plan, addressing critical issues in the marketing and communications area.
• Develop necessary research, as needed by Marketing Department.
• Conducts market research activities in order to keep abreast of changing demographics and other relevant information needed to evaluate marketing and communications activities.
• Gather Marketing data from multiple sources and analyze and interpret to determine customer satisfaction, preferences, and product trends.
• Assist and produce presentations for specific brands and/or customers.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

--I have also been given more of a web development role. This consists of more site analytics and maintenance along with future site expansion.

I have been working as a temp with this premium supplier for almost 2 years now. The department has offered me a permanent direct hire position with the same title. I am curious whether or not to ask for a Marketing Specialist title (or a different title) as I specialize more in individual marketing categories (account sales support, market research, experiential marketing, and web development). Although I've gained a tremendous amount of knowledge, I do not feel I've gained the experience needed for a management title. I also feel that the "coordinator" title is a bit tacky and fits the role of an assistant which I do not feel I am.

What do you feel I should do given the current situation I am in?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The difference can be nothing, or everything. There is no standard for what duties or responsibilities a certain marketing title would have, but instead these are set by each company. A marketing coordinator could be an admin at one company, and someone running the marketing at another.

So it really comes down to what title do you think would give you more value on your resume, and that is what you can push for.

Oh if they'd go or the Marketing Manager or similar title, you might as well take it.

What's the difference between "dinner" and "supper?"

Everyone defines different positions a little differently, so pick a title you're comfortable with and ask for it. There is no "standard" answer to your question.

Assuming that you do everything you say you do and that you do it well, you're right: "coordinator" is too low-end. Being a temp for two years is also low-end, but in an economy like this, your company has probably just been playing it cautiously.

If you move to manager, you may have to manage people instead of just data and projects. Are you ready for that?

How about "Marketing Programs Administrator," "Online Marketing Administrator," or "Marketing Administrator"?
