I think that's a long way off, and by the time we do get to something that's a meaningul improvement over what we have now, it probably won't even involve the Internet, at least not as we see and use it today.

As an aside, I would like to see the voting opened up to three days including a weekend in an effort to get participation up. Bad weather, which is unpredictable, can keep even well intentioned, responsible citizens at home.

Yes, I expect we will be able to vote by Internet. Big challenge will be ensuring that the person voting is who they say they are. But that really isn't all that different than ensuring that a person who votes by mail (as I did already) is really the right person.

As a matter of fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the Internet is being used as part of the process now. The polling places often report electronically their results, and they may be using the Internet to transmit the data right now.

    Absolutely positively yes!

The efforts that federal, state and local governments have already made in managing digital identies, e-signatures, encryption and so forth will make this possible sooner than you think. The primary thing holding back progress will be getting electronic voting FUNDED.

If you want to see whitepapers and presentations by thought leaders in e-government, go to www.ec3.org .

Shameless plug: I designed their website when I was actively involved in the organization two years ago.

    Good points, Bob.

The Republican party looks more like the Taliban to me every day! Bush conservatives who lie "in the name of God" are dangerous, indeed.
