With most Ph. D programs you have an adviser that will help you select your area of specialization and the topic for your dissertation. What interests you most about branding? Once you think on that, then see if anybody else has written a dissertation on that same topic. Personally I don't think you want to be as broad as you stated in your question. Study the interaction of products and brands and determine the factors that make a brand take off and resonate with customers. Of course somebody has probably studied that so you may need to take a different approach to it.

I've been thinking about going back for Doctorate in Management, (DM) but I'm not sure I want to commit the next 4 years and the money to complete the degree. Good luck to you.

I'm not sure if that answers your question.

Could it be that if you're contemplating doing a Ph. D. in branding and you have no idea what you're doing to study, might that possibly make you a little bit dangerous to the wider world of marketing as a whole?

    Probably not.

Unless your research will make a significant contribution to the world of marketing, how will you earning a Ph. D benefit the science and art of branding?
