What Are The Most Important Things I Need To Learn

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points

Hi,

I am a marketing professional working full time in the Television / Media industry. My day to day duties consist of scheduling promos for various programming on specialty television stations.

I want to get into working with the more direct creative side (writing copy, developing campaigns, ads etc.

Besides job shadowing in the areas I'm interested in within the company what are some direct ways of gaining experience in the field to create more value as a marketer. I would like to branch out and work in more of a boutique agency where my creative and business drives would find greater expression.

I am planning on becoming an expert in Online Marketing with particular interest in using new social media to produce improved results.

Should I be approaching businesses as a freelance marketer to get more hands on experience in the field?

In order to LEARN, you must first UNLEARN. By this I mean you must forget the nonsense that is already cluttering your thinking.

    What kind of nonsense?

That creativity is all that matters. That sales are not important. That the customer doesn't know what he or she wants. That "traditional" media is dead. That no one reads long copy anymore.

Marketing's function is to increase revenue. Good marketing drives sales that generate revenues. Bad marketing pisses people off and results in the brand or product being remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Forget being creative, forget being clever: Focus on meeting needs, on exceeding expectations, and on solving problems.

Forget becoming an "expert". Invest time in making yourself USEFUL to clients by helping them solve people's problems and by helping them increase revenue.
