Let's start with your travel apps. What makes them better different from the other apps, websites, books that are out there? For who? How many people are using the apps? Are they being vocal in providing testimonials/reviews?

Once you're clearly articulating what makes your apps for the right person with specific needs, then you can approach media who serve this community (don't forget online bloggers as well).

You'll also want to have additional marketing information - perhaps videos of people using the app, or video testimonials, etc.

Hi Jay-Thanks for the response. The challenge is to get the preliminary downloads and reviews required to get other people interested in the app.
I know I can approach the media directly but for a company like mine, would it make sense to work through sole practitioner PR professionals (as opposed to high overhead PR firms) to approach the media. And if so, how do I find somebody that has those media connections. There are loads of media lists out there but I always think it is more effective to tap into personal networks.
    Any thoughts?

If you don't have people already downloading the app - give it away to a number of people (a travel club, a travel agent's clients, etc.) to test out and comment on. The media are deluged with requests for free PR. So, rather than join that club - first get a following, then share the tool & the community with the media. It's a much stronger pitch, especially if you get some great stories from people whose vacations were saved or made spectacular from your app.

Colleges around this time of year would be a good place to start giving away free copies. Kids are planning their spring breaks and if you gave a few hundred copies away and they rated it n the marketplace with good reviews it could give your app a good shot in the arm that t needs. Also travel agencies might be somewhere you would like to go to push your app. Possibly try to sell it to different agencies as an enterprise app customized for each agency. Good Luck!
