Texas A&m Mrktg Vs. Medill Imc

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Dear All,

I am a MS in Marketing applicant from India, who has three years of work experience in B2B marketing specifically in the telecommunications Industry. I have recently been admitted into two prestigious programs:

Texas A&M, MS in Marketing : With scholarship and residentship CoA is $ 22k
Northwestern Medill IMC Program: No scholarships, CoA is $ 122K

I love Medill IMC's vibrant class profile, course-work and brilliant faculty- pioneers of Mrktg...
But at the same time it hard to access whether it is worthwile to invest in such an expensive program which has more of a B2C focus.

My main objective is to study math marketing principles and application of such models. While Medill IMC is data driven, TAMU course seems to have more of an overall marketing concentration with focus on consulting projects. Quite confused.

It's hard for me to put Texas A&M in the same category as Northwestern Medill. Medill has such a great reputation that it will almost certainly outshine Texas A&M when it comes to reputation in marketing circles -- B2C or B2B.

Now you have the issue of the VALUE of the reputation. That's harder. Where do you think you'd like to work once you get your degree? If you're going to be in India, maybe WHAT you learn is more important than WHERE you learn it.

And the $100k difference is definitely a substantial consideration.

My vote (personal): If you can swing the $122k for Medill, I'd go there. If you can't, then there isn't much to talk about, is there? It's a moot question.

Thank you Mr. mgoodman. This has always been my dream school! NU wins hands down when it comes to marketing.

How you rate Medill IMC program versus Columbia's MS in Mrktg program? The latter being offered by Columbia GSB.

Would a student have an edge being in the NY area as against Chicago? Also by obtaining a degree by Columbia's GSB as against NU's Medill School of journalism.

I am very thrilled to be accepting Medill's offer, but just wanted to get all my doubts cleared before taking the step.

Now this is a tough one: Medill vs. Columbia GSB.

It's really a toss-up in my mind ... at least from the standpoint of reputation. I guess I might lean toward Columbia GSB on the basis that you'd get a more well-rounded business education, not just focused on Marketing or Marketing Communication.

But it's been a long time since I was personally involved in evaluating the programs at top B-Schools, so it's possible things have changed.

I doubt that about this particular MS program from Columbia GSB. It seems to be extremely concentrated on three channels of Market Research, New Product Development/Innovation & Branding and has a duration of just one year. https://www7.gsb.columbia.edu/ms/marketing
In all, the course (my humble opinion) seems to be more on an academic track fit for students who want to pursue a PHD later on.

I am going to go with Medill's program for it's hands-on practical approach.

Just need to get the money flowing to pay for it. :)
