Average Online Form Abandonment Rates

Posted by timo kruskopf on 125 Points
Does anyone know average rates for form abandonment per business segment. That is form views versus form submissions.
I've seen figures around 75-85 %. Of course depends on form type. Now I'm looking at order forms (amazon order, commodity product order like gas, electricity...).
So send me statistics or study sources please.

It depends on the form, how many questions/items to be completed, whether it's a simple one-item order or a shopping cart, the category, the form design itself, and a zillion other things.

The AVERAGE is totally meaningless. What would you possibly use this for?

(Example: We know that abandonment is inversely related to the number of items to be completed, so simple forms will always do better than longer/more complex forms. An "average" would include forms with just one item (e.g., email address) and forms with 6 or more items (e.g., first name, last name, street address, city, state or province, postal code, phone, credit card number, expiration date, security code, etc., etc.)

Thanks for quick response. To mgoodman: meaningful it is when you try to setup basic kpi's first time or when you try to sell engagement & nurturing solutions. These 60-80 % nearly bought your product and are a high priority prospects.
Thanks to stlubahn: votes goes to you!
