Marketing Cert + Spanish... Any Value There?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I've recently graduated from Temple University with a degree in Spanish and I'm considering all possibilities. Marketing is a field I might be interested and I was thinking about taking classes to get a certificate at a local college (also to learn more about what it is). Would a certificate be worth my time in terms of real-world value?

The certificate isn't worth nearly as much as what you'll learn in the process. By all means take the courses and learn all you can.

Once you've done that, you should have a good idea of whether you want to pursue a career in marketing or not. And, as long as you've done the work and earned it, there's nothing wrong with accepting the certificate.

If taking a class is of interest, do so. Alternatively, you might contact your career office and find some local marketing contacts (students who graduated recently), and do an information interview with them. Find out what they do, what skills they needed, and find out if it feels like a "fit" to you. That'll help you decide if the certificate is the right next step.

Let's reengineer your question, shall we?

Would your possession of a certificate be worth your CLIENT's time or your EMPLOYER's time?

It's not the piece of paper's relevance to YOU, it's your skill, ability, and attitude and how these things benefit other people.
