Asked For Marketing Portfolio At Interview

Posted by rum68br on 500 Points
Hello people,

I have got an interview arranged for 2 weeks time for a senior online marketing executive role and I have been asked to bring examples of what I have done in previous role.

I have never been asked to bring in a portfolio before, so I do not have one. Has anyone else been asked to provide a marketing portfolio and if so what kind of things did it include?

Thank you all for your help

Well, never having gone for an interview as a marketer, I might not be the right person to answer this. But then, I have never had a job I was qualified for. It didn't stop me getting them either.

However, whatever your bosses are looking for, they will look for some form of integrity. My point is that if you offer one genuine mistake you have made, it shows you are genuine. Everybody can say they are honest. Few demonstrate it. In any case, take it along and should the conversation take that course, you are armed.

Hope this gives you a little insight! In any case, good luck!

I would interpret "portfolio" to mean "examples," and I'd be prepared to discuss some of your most impressive accomplishments as a marketer.

Obviously the more relevant the examples are to the company's situation the better the examples will seem (to them). And in any case they should demonstrate your (a) analytical skills, (b) excellent judgment, and (c) initiative (i.e., willingness to make a decision and take action).

If you can demonstrate those three things, I would think the interviewers would be suitably impressed.

And don't forget to set the stage for each example, with enough background so that your accomplishment is meaningful. YOU know what was involved, but someone else won't know that, so you need to tell your story completely ... with an introduction (or set-up), your approach, the solution, and the outcome/result.

Your portfolio needs to include examples of press ads, press articles, press releases, and other articles you've written, edited, or contributed to.

If you have video, include that as well, even if this means sending links via e-mail. The portfolio also needs to include examples of headlines, calls to action, and offer-based campaigns you've created or contributed to.

This is your chance to show off your marketing ideas, and the ways in which you've worked with media buyers, graphic designers, other marketing people, fund raisers, and clients in general.

The point here is to show the person you're meeting
with what you can do for them.

Start with your best piece of work, end with your
second best piece of work, and makes sure everything
in between is something you're 100 percent happy with.
