Most industries have associations and trade magazines that promote to them, so advertising in these or buying their lists would be possible ways to reach these people. I Googled "maritime trade magazines" and a bunch came up.

For most businesses like this where you are trying to reach some industry professional, I wouldn't even think of Facebook or Twitter. LinkedIn may work.

If you have the time to learn it, Google's display network could work for you here. You can target interests quite easily - and maritime professionals will be looking at the various online magazines as you mention. The best thing about the display network (which is quite different from their search/PPC advertising) is that the people you are targeting don't have to be looking for the things you are selling.

The display network covers blogs, newspapers, anything where a Google syndicated advert can be placed. Getting some familiarity with it would be no bad thing for a student as it is both poorly understood and poorly used.

Other than that you could try the Blue Kremlin in Hong Kong ... quite a few maritime professionals I know meet there regularly.

Trade associations, trade journals, trade websites through long tail keyword searches. Then, start making phone calls.

... also inquire about renting email addresses from online and printed maritime publications. These publications will probably want to control the emailing roll-out and the email (packages) may be less expensive based on your roi and other metrics.
