Career Quest

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hello everyone
My name is Dhanaji Patil,I am currently pursuing MBA (Marketing) just 2 weeks a ago I gave my final 4th sem exam.I have also acquired a P.G.D.F.T(post graduate diploma in foreign trade degree)affiliated to pune university while doing my First year of MBA. Currently am in the phase of “Job Hunt”(I am a fresher )…this is where I first encountered my dilemma ..actually I am pretty confused as in which aspect of marketing should I choose as a career ,I knw I might sound pretty indifferent to reality of the current market. I knw with the current industry growth rate of some 1 or 2 percent growth rate we freshers don’t have much choice we just need to take whatever we have in the plate !!
But still I am very confused as in what type of job should I choose…its easy for my frnds as they say one should just do or take the job he enjoys doing…or which fits his capabilities…but unfortunately I have to mention this I am even confused about that I mean yes I know what I am interested in and what my hobbies are but still I am not able to narrow down my options !!
I AM SURE THIS MIGHT NOT BE A QUESTION FIR FOR THE PREFFESIONALS AND EXPERIENCE PPL HERE,but I will be glad if anyone of you could put some halogen light on this issue of mine..God bless.
I will jus give in some of my details in order to help you ppl to judge me.
Strengths:
I am born and brought up in a small town, but since last 5 years i.e graduation to post graduation I have shifted to places away from my hometown. It has helped me a lot , understand ppl ,know how to behave in many ways modify my and change my perception from being reserved to open(jus views :P)
I am an average hardworker.i do my work with sincerity and commitment.
I Enjoy reading novels and much more…which has made my sense to use “words”in a betterway.
I took marketing as for me its always been about understanding ppl there needs there perceptions about what they are buying and then changing your stratergy and actions according to it, For me its all about networking , creating contacts.I Suppose or believe to a minimum level that I am good with that.
I am adaptive and flexible…yes I am resistant to change but once when I start to adopt the changes I do adopt and adapt according to them and get blend in….
Currently I have started to practice Minimalism…jus in the initial stages though…
Weakness:
(This the worst nightmare for a Marketing personel) ..i have a bit of stammering/ stuttering not a lot but a bit…it usually occurs when I get hyper about explaining something or am taking to ppl who are superior and positioned above me..though currently am into meditation and boosting my confidence kinda stuff..and also breathing techniques I have reduced the occurrence and gained awareness about it..i am sure one day I will be able to cure it totally.i knew I had stammering since the beginning of my Post graduation even though I opted for Marketing. I knw marketing is all about communication but somewhere I felt I was good at it rather I will be very good at it so I took this daring step..
I do have/had some “run away from responsibility “( THIS COULD ALSO JUST MEAN THAT I WORK BETTER UNDER SOMEONE’S GUIDANCE) issues..its just that I am a bit scared of new things or beginnings but I would like to emphasis on the point that when I get adjusted into the flow or change I get adapted to the environment pretty quickly and perform really well…its jus that I need a kind of push …currently I am also working on that in order to create the “need to achieve” which will keep on motivating me to move ahead and cross my inhibitions…
I guess I do have/had some inferiority complex issues but have worked on them too and I am sure it will be over soon,(this is because of my low and poor academics in school and High school I guess)..Whatever it is I am pretty sure I will handle them.
….Now the big issue, I have heard and read many successful ppl of todays generation have never thought about where they want to go or which field or aspect of field they want to be in but they just had jumped in to whatever opportunity they got and then they established themselves in those fields…but some have carefully planned and waited patiently to go into the field of there interests and are doing awsmm in thoses fields and they believe that if they had gone into some other field they would have become a complete mess….
Hence this has intensified my dilemma….

I will just give out small part of PG life in order to have a better picture of myself in front of you or to be right to help you judge me....i.e details of my summer Internship….i moved to Mumbai in order to pursue my internship it was a big decision for me to move to Mumbai as it would mean to live alone in the big city feared by many parent s when it comes to letting there children to go in mumbai(usual thought of parents from small towns)…I got recruited in iball mobiles as promoter my job was to meet different retailers area wise and assist them in sales and explain products to them.at times I have worked as retailers ”sales person”, some treated us a “door openers” for there shops I have worked in Mumbai summer for two months and I have been honest with my job to a great extent it was great to live all by yourself and travel and meet new people everyday ..in Mumbai ur constantly challenged actually did my SIP very well my topic was "Brand comparriosn iball vs micromax" i am quite interested in branding side of marketing and customer relationship ..to round up it was a heavy learning experience and somehow I fell in love with Mumbai and decided to start my corporate career in Mumbai itself..there is something enigmatic about Mumbai…somehow it never lets u sleep empty stomach..i mean Mumbai feeds each and every person who has a skill( if never experienced this try and watch the sales personal at heera panna or masjid bander or even the begger u find near bandra and Fort area of Mumbai…it feels like even they know how to market themselves…and stuff like that ..they know how to read there targets and prepare there actions according to that anyways I jus knw Mumbai keeps on giving u opportunities (I have never felt this notion in any city I have been too, or may be I have have missed it)..anyways lets concentrate on my issue :-
I jus want to say I seriously knw that I have ability to extend my wings and go for the big fly/leap but I jus don’t know In which direction to run into….in this case which career to choose. I don’t even know that wether its important to choose one that fits your case or just select that is in front of you and adapt and flourish into that …
I knw u guys might think why haven I discussed about this with my own network of ppl ..actually I have but still I need an experts opinion which I am sure I will get from you people. I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE EXPERTS AND PROFESSIONALS AND USED TO BIGGER SITUATIONS THAN THIS AND DO A LOT OF VALUE ADDED WORK I MEAN BY HELPING PEOPLE but I WOULD BE GLAD AND THANKFUL IF YOU COULD HELP ME OUT IN THIS SITUATION…WAITING FOR UR value addition.

There are no guarantees in life. A job that sounds great may not be so wonderful. An employer that others don't like working for, may be the perfect fit for you. And your future won't be decided by trying to think your way through it - you need to try it on yourself and see what you do and don't like. Perhaps instead of looking for employment, you should start working as an intern in various companies to better understand what you like. Or find someone like yourself in your area, and have them mentor you. Or attend lots of networking events, taking the time to interview people (ask them questions) to better figure out what could work for you. If you're worried about your interpersonal skills, consider finding someone to coach you with your self-image and tangible networking skills. But ultimately you do need to try something, gain experiences, so you can better figure out what you like, what you're good at, and where you best belong.

First of all "JAY" thanks a lot for taking out u r valuable time to respond to my query..i agree with u that there are no guarantees in life about anything, one cannot know until he try's out things i.e experiments on stuff...so that he will understand whts good for him and what isnt.. what u have suggested is clearly a great advice but i am not convinced totally , as still the picture is vague too me...what u said might take a great deal of time to make it work....and already a lot of time has been wasted..i knw the question which i have stated cannot be answered precisely but i will surely consider as well as remember what u have told me...i would just be glad if someone could make a bit clear point as in where i need to head..i think "Jay Hamilton-roth" have given me a great and valuable advice which i will surely digest and apply..but it would be really great if someone could clarify as in what else can be done in above situation other than the option given, so that i can atleast do a trade off, could analyze the opportunity cost ...just a request. thanks everybody. thanks Jay.God bless.

I'm tired, there's one piece of advice I'd like to share. Try to find a job that allows for your weaknesses - the best kind of boss will be hiring you for your strengths and the weaknesses are something that the team you work in need to back you up on.

I know that bosses want everybody to be perfect, only the other side of there being no guarantees is that you just can't get perfect staff.

As to work, you have very little experience so far - take what's offered and make the best of it. At least it'll be something on your CV. It will also allow you some real weight when applying for other jobs, and like it or loathe it, it will have given you valuable insights into what you really want to do.

I was looking for work a very long time ago and knocked on the door of a company. Just on spec, okay? They told me I was half an hour late, and this sort of thing just would not do! Puzzled, I asked them what was up and they explained. Then I explained that I had just looked them up in the yellow pages! Anyway it transpired that we weren't a good match - and he suggested I try this other place. Which turned out to be a small house in the suburbs. I wasn't impressed.

Nevertheless, I got on fine with the gentleman who interviewed me - who would become my immediate upline manager. I didn't know it but I had just landed myself a job with Germany's third largest industrial design bureau.

    You never can tell!
