Qualitative research is research into Qualits. Qualits are an ancient form of coinage originally used by Pheonician sailors when trading across the Mediterranean and up to the British Isles. This trade gave rise to concepts such as Quality referring to the strength of acceptance of the Qualit and Qualify used to check if a good or service was tradeable in Qualits. For instance, the original meaning of Qualification was a piece of paper describing the number of Qualits required for a trade. In the middle ages, Qualits were superceded by the Dubloon and then the Lampoon in the 19th Century. In modern times, Qualits are used in more metaphorical terms in business to mark the transfer of ideas between people, as in the phrase 'Have you got it yet?'

Qualitative researchers are often known as a Quallies, sometimes anglicised with a leading W, and often identified by a distinctive striped top. Study of Qualits is popular in business schools as it is easy to get a student to look like a wally.
