How To Use Porter's Diamond Model

Posted by lala3190 on 250 Points
I am trying to do a university assignment, I was told to critically discuss to what extent Porter's Diamond is a useful concept in explaining home and host location strategies of international business. Does this mean I have to apply Porter's diamond model to the home country or the host country or both? For example, Walmart in China.

Also can you help me to explain how I can apply Porter's diamond model. I know there are 4 main points; factor conditions; demand conditions; firm strategy, structure and rivalry; related and supporting industries.

Thankyou.

Ask your tutor or professor for guidance.

Why not examine how each of the four points is the same, and different, in home and host countries?

I have emailed my tutor but she has not answered me yet.

That is a good idea, however we have to apply it to 2 case companies, and our word limit is 1500, I am not sure if I would be able to do it within the 1500 limit, what do you think? Do you think it can be written within 1500? Thanks!

You could do it in 500 words.

The info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_model may be helpful in talking about how it could be useful, but also some of its limitations.

This is not a model I use, but it looks more like it works with industries in geographies, and not specific companies in geographies. So instead of WalMart, you might look at retailing in general or maybe big box retailing as more specific. How does it look in the US. Things like the suburban spread of US consumers, income of US consumers, effective warehouse and delivery methods, access to cheap goods to stock the stores, workforce availability, etc. all likely would be factors to consider. These same factors categories are likely very different in China.

    2 companies x 4 points = 8 comparisons.

At 150 words each, that would give you 1,200 words, leaving you with 250 words for an intro and summary. If you just focus on what you want to communicate I'll bet you can do the whole thing in 1,000 words or less. This will reflect your clear thinking and concise communication, and will force you not to be verbose or rambling.

    Good assignment.
