    It depends on what they are actually doing, where, their level of experience, expertise, value to their employers/clients, and a number of other factors.

    If you're operating as a freelancer, I put the question the other way around.

    Quite simply take your minimum income needs and divide it by five. That's then your hourly rate. For myself I divided it by two because I'm in an ultra-niche market.

    Remember that much of your time is spent getting the work in, so your actual hourly rate will be much less.
