Tagline For Nonprofit Movie Theater

Posted by bethdeth on 125 Points
I'm looking for a new tagline for our nonprofit movie theater in Washington, DC as we are currently overhauling all of our marcom materials.

Our current tagline is "DC's only nonprofit film center", which though descriptive, is quite boring.

Here is our press release boilerplate to give some context:

The oldest operating movie house in the area, The Avalon Theatre has been a cornerstone of northwest Washington, DC since the its opening in 1923. After the theater was abruptly closed in 2001, a community group formed the nonprofit Avalon Theatre Project, with the mission to reopen the Avalon. An amazing grassroots effort resulted in the successful restoration of the historic theater, which reopened in April 2003. The Avalon now offers exciting and diverse programming, including first-run studio films, independent & foreign films, film festivals, a weekly Wednesday night series, and special programs for families and seniors.

We did a survey recently and found that the top reasons people attend the theater are "to support my local neighborhood theater" and "the selection of films" so I am trying to work with that - something combining the cozy local neighborhood aspect of the theater with the expansive, intelligent film programming that we offer. Our audience tends to be older (50+), so our programming is sophisticated but not edgy.

    Hi bethdeth

    Congratulations for the initiative.

I do not see your present tagline so boring. And yes, quite descriptive indeed. But if you really would like something more neighbourhood-related, why don´t you ask your neighbours? Besides getting a lot of ideas, you will strengthen the community sense of your center.

Open the contest with a given time frame: for instance, give 10 days to submit the ideas to an dedicated email and phisical suggestion box staing both the suggested tagline plus name and contact of the author.

Then go to the Internet and publish a list of your preferred top 15 taglines, and have the people voting. Decide a prize for all the 15, and special ones for the winning one ( 6 months two-people free entrance for the winner, for instance, and less for the following two or three). Use the social media to promote participation. Give also a clear due date, no more than a week.

Properly organised and promoted, you will be surpised by the amount and quality of many suggestions.

    Good luck!

I see little wrong with your current tag line. However, if you must change it, consider doing so with your audience's preferences in mind: D.C.'s neighborhood community theater.

Maybe just replace "only non-profit" with "neighborhood."
