Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I am currently in the process of creating a line of baby and children's clothes but need some help with the name. The clothes is half special occasion and half everyday. There will be smocked clothes, appliqués, and monogramming. Most pieces will have some parts that are handmade. I really need help thinking of a name!! Any input would be appreciated.

I was thinking something a little more chic. Like one or two words. Examples are: kissy kissy, hip squeak, crowns&castles..

The name will also be used on the label of clothes so it can't be too long.

Who is the target audience? Where? What makes your clothing line different from, and better than, competition? Where/how will people learn about the line?

Do you have a business/marketing plan? If so, perhaps you can share some of the key elements with us. If not, the planning should probably precede the name, so we are sure we're communicating the right strategic positioning.

That's a very good idea. This is high end boutique clothes with a target audience of moms with disposable income (middle class and up). Clothes will range from $40-$85. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you need more information.

Where? How distributed? Online marketing or through retail distribution, or through your own bricks-and-mortar outlet? It's still not clear exactly what the business is. Are you making stuff one-off, or do you have a cut-and-sew production facility? Or are you a retailer? An e-tailer?

What ages of kids? Male, female or both?

I'm sorry I have the production facility and clothes will run from 3 months to 4T for both boys and girls. I will have an online boutique and be available to distribute to small boutiques.

We still don't know what country or continent, or how people will find out about you. And it sounds like you don't really have a business/marketing plan, right?

The store will be online based which means that it could potentially be world wide but I'm going to focus on the market in the US. People will find out about company through website searches and social media. I do not have a defined business plan but regardless this business will be up and running by end of January because sales will peak in spring. Spring and holidays are peak times for this type of attire.

I'm really not trying to be difficult, but some of what you are saying doesn't compute.

Even if you spend a lot of money on SEO starting January 15, 2015 you'd be lucky to get any real traction from web searches until Spring 2016! And if you only spend a moderate amount, it could be 2017 or never.

Let me suggest you spend a little bit of time doing some business planning, including some pro forma financial projections, because it's not clear you have a viable business proposition. And children's clothing is a highly competitive category online. Before you expend resources on a robust website, you'll want to be sure you understand what will be required for marketing and other up-front expenses before the business reaches payout level.

Need some reading material on this? Let me suggest "3 Pitfalls that Kill Most New Businesses ... and How YOU Can Avoid Them!" https://bit.ly/SstLq2 It will be $20 well spent.

I'm pretty sure I asked for advice on a name not on the success of my business!! I have chosen to not do any of those numbers or research because I'm just following my gut and heart on this venture. This has been a dream of mine for years. Next time you want to tell someone that their business venture is going to fail try to stop yourself. You have no idea how much is already invested emotionally and financially!!!!

I'm sorry my comment came so close to the quick. I didn't intend to hurt you.

The thing is that coming up with a name is an implicit endorsement of the marketing plan, because the name itself is an expression of your positioning, and the positioning is the cornerstone of the marketing plan.

I would feel terrible if I contributed to the launch of a business that I thought was iffy without leveling with the entrepreneur while there was still time to fix things. I just don't operate that way. I call things the way I see them.

I'll butt out now. I think you've already decided how you want to proceed, and it's not something that I'm comfortable abetting.

Best of luck to you. Maybe others here will see things differently and be able to help you.

There are trillions of possibilities. Pick something you like, that represents you and your idea of what your clothes stand for or represent. It can be your name, or abstract like 'Sunflower', or the name of a place, or a character in a book (check for trademarks). Something that makes you distinctive against all the other children boutique clothes.

Alternatively get some samples and take them round to retailers and mother and toddler groups for comments (don't even need to worry about the name yet), but you might pick up ideas from what they say and how they react. Just remember selling online is harder than it looks - real people in real shops may give you better early success until you've established yourself.

Thank you for that respectful response and name ideas. My plan is to go to boutiques throughout Texas and to allow mommys to host trunk shows in their homes. Loves some of your names. Will definitely consider.
