Need Help With A Business Name

Posted by jenih on 25 Points
Hi all,

I am new to the site and want some advice/help with naming my online shop. I am pretty creative when it comes to handmade arts/crafts etc. but naming my soon to be online shop is tough. I have been creating different types of crafts, jewellery and art for years now and after some gentle pushing by my husband, friends and family I am going to sell them online....I am thinking of making an Etsy store (??) as well as my own website to link too. I have previously only sold to friends and family as well as crafts shows and farmers markets. I made my own cards up as well, but I think I need some advice from some of you.

The name I have been using is Ojibwa Girl -Handmade Creations. I am of aboriginal descent and my family suggested that I use that as part of my "branding" uniqueness (??) I have read that you should have a name that is easy to say, read, write and unique but I am not sure using my current name is wise. further, I now that using something like Creations is pretty vague but I have not found another word to use. I paint in oils, watercolours and acrylics (starting to learn alcohol inks too), I make jewellery, all different crafts, wreaths, paper art, and this Christmas went crazy with making and selling gnomes; the only thing I don't do is knit.

Hoping you can give me some insight or ideas.

Thank you
Jeni

"Ojibwa Girl" could be a good name for your business if you're focused on art that leverages your heritage. Otherwise, it might be confusing name that might not be easy to remember/spell correctly.

You could simply use your name to launch your online store as an artist. While you can create lots of beautiful art, if there's something that you're especially good or beloved by people, then focus on that sort of name rather than a very generic name. Don't pick a name based on the materials you use, since that'll likely be limiting.

Sounds like you had a healthy set of sales over Christmas. Good luck to you.

    Thank you Jay and Gary,

Would do you think of me using my name for my paintings and a site name for all my others crafts etc.? I showed your responses to my hubby and he suggested that I ask you about that. Would it be reasonable (?) to have both names (my name and co. name) feeding into the same site?

If the audience for your paintings is the same for your crafts, then you may be confusing them by using different names for each.
