How Copywrite A Tagline?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am developing a tagline for my business. How can I copywrite it? Are there levels of registration? Is there a different legal process for protecting taglines...that is, other than copywrite? Thank you

You want to CopyWRITE it first (Get the words right), then CopyRIGHT (protect it from being copied)it! sorry to be pedantic. :)

Copyright is just a way of staking your claim. The only protection it affords is when someone else uses it, you can prove you were there first and announced that you thought it was "yours."

If you're not prepared to police the claim and take action if/when someone else uses your copyright, you might as well save yourself the trouble of worrying about it.

You can put the copyright symbol on anything you want. That doesn't mean it's yours. Someone else may have used it first, and/or it may be a weak (i.e., unprotectable) word, name, phrase, or tagline.

I am not a lawyer, and this should not be taken as legal advice.

You might want to take a look at this brief tutorial on the US Patent & Trademark Office website:
