Hi, I have a BA in Marketing and an MBA. Currently I am working w/an Advertising-Interactive Agency for 2.5 yrs. I would like to relocate to west coast and find a position that can kick off my career in the consumer products industry or CPG. I have only 1 year of experience in marketing consumer services and 5 years of business operations. Although I have loved my past experiences in small business I am ready for the corporate world. My objective at this time is to network and learn about any avenues that might enhance the possibilities kick off my career. Problems I have encountered are competition from students from Top 10 univeristies or years of experience. Any advice, links, contacts?

At the risk of boring the regulars with this somewhat self-serving message, let me suggest you get a copy of The Potato Chip Difference : How to apply leading edge marketing strategies to landing the job you want.

It gives numerous case studies and examples of how to go about finding the job you want. It's not about selling yourself. It's about understanding who it is that most needs the benefits you can deliver.

In the end, that's really what marketing is all about: identifying and satisfying unmet customer needs, and doing it in a way that makes both you and the customer winners.

In a job search, that means finding a company whose biggest problem is one that you are uniquely qualified to solve. Ultimately, that's how people really find a job that satisfies them.

The Potato Chip Difference is available through Amazon.com, bn.com, and most bookstores in the US. You can preview the preface and chapter 1 at www.potatochipdifference.com . You can also buy the book at that site and get a free booklet titled:

10 Stupid Things Job Seekers Do That Guarantee They'll Be Looking For Work Again Soon

Note: I wouldn't be recommending this if I didn't really think it would help address your question ... regardless of my connection to the book.
