Fully three-quarters (77%) of Facebook pages––public pages set up by brands, media outlets, and celebrities––have fewer than 1,000 fans and only 4% of Facebook pages have more than 10,000 fans, according to a study by Sysomos.

Facebook pages have become an increasingly popular tool for major brands, high-profile organizations, and celebrities for engaging with the public. Among the nearly 600,000 pages analyzed:

  • 65% have more than 100 fans.
  • 23% have more than 1,000 fans.

Facebook Page Content

Wall post frequency does not appear to correlate with page popularity: One wall post is created every 15.7 days on the average Facebook page, whereas one wall post is created every 16.1 days among pages with more than one million fans.

However, pages with more than one million fans have nearly three times as much owner-generated content (70.4 pieces) compared with the average Facebook page (26.8 pieces).

Pages with more than one million fans have nearly 60 times as much fan-generated content (586.9 pieces) compared with the average Facebook page (9.5 pieces).

About the data: The study was conducted by Sysomos and is the first large-scale analysis of over 600,000 Facebook pages to examine use patterns and report on different aspects of pages, including popularity, amount of content posted, number of fans, and categories.
