Most Americans say they are concerned about the impact artificial intelligence could have on jobs and society, though most also say they haven't yet used generative AI programs such as ChatGPT, according to recent research from Ipsos.
The report was based on data from a survey conducted April 20-24, 2023, among a nationally representative sample of 1,008 general population adults in the US age 18 or older.
Some 71% of respondents say they are concerned about the impact AI could have on jobs and society and 76% say they are concerned about deepfakes driving misinformation.
Only 16% of Americans say they have used a text-based or visual generative AI system, such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, Bard, Midjourney or Stable Diffusion.
Nearly the same share of Americans view AI favorably (39%) as unfavorably (43%).
Just over half (53%) of respondents say they think it's the responsibility of the companies developing AI to limit the risks of the technology, whereas 44% think it's the responsibility of the government. However, only a quarter of respondents say they trust companies to develop AI systems with the public's well-being in mind, whereas 75% say they have little to no trust in companies to do so.
Some 55% of Americans think AI will be another piece of technology among many, 36% think AI will fundamentally change American society, and 6% think AI won’t have much of an impact on society.
In a separate survey of 1,117 US adults conducted May 9-10, 2023, the researchers found most Americans are comfortable with AI tackling tasks such as analyzing data to help companies make decisions but are not comfortable with AI tackling tasks such as creating video or audio in the likeness of actual living humans.
