A Tough But Interesting Question

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Here's a tough question for anyone who has a business website:

"If you could spend however much you liked on improving just one thing on your website, what would that be?"

I am writing an article about online marketing and would appreciate some general input! Many thanks, Peter Hobday

Thanks, swany. Does that mean you would hire a copywriter to improve the text if you had the money?

Thanks Dee Dee. Are you writing about your site? Just to clarify: I would like to know what you would spend YOUR money on. In your case, would you hire an expert editor or moderator and insert some software to run a forum, chat page or other interactive page?

    What's on your wish list?

Starting point has to be your target audience. Figure out the words that they use to describe your product and build a website that fulfills this.

In answer to your question: I would constantly monitor and improve the keyword pool - your selection of words that can be filtered through to every element of your site from page titles and header tags to navigation, meta description, content and anchor text.

If you can get into the mind of your clients, then you can create sites that they can not only find but will also buy into.

depends on the kind of business !!! - a typical consultant answer :-)

If I were the owner of a website that relied on advertising I would spend my money on anything that could increase my ad income.

Otherwise if I were the owner of a website that had an e-commerce area, I would probably invest on anything that could increase my income: richer contents (a content manager), with more and easier to use information, a better customer retention tool (allowing for repetitive selling) such as a good customer database - sometimes they come with the package.

I think the trick here is to align your website with the strategic focus of your business, and invest on tha whatever single factor that allows you to faster and better achieve your goals.

That's an extreme question, though: you usually don't have to choose one single aspect of your website to invest into.

And it depends on your kind of website. If, for instance it has links to your backoffice apps then any investmente you make on your catalog, your billing system, your HR app, etc will have a sometimes more important effect on your website than most of the direct investments you could possibly put into it.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks! So far most people have chosen different things to improve their websites, but the three favourites are: stickiness, SEO and copy.

For my site, I would spend the money on someone organising inbound links for me.

Any other wishes from site owners?

Thanks Kcrowson: it sounds like you need technical expertise. Most of the response from siteowners has been about improving words and other creative work.

It seems a pity there are no suppliers out there already who can provide what you need - to save cart contents past the current session - for a reasonable cost. Perhaps it's to do with the fact that most Internet purchases are impulsive?
    Thanks for your contribution.
