I'm Working On A Site Redesign And Need Suggestions

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I'm working on a web site for a restaurant and I'm looking for creative additions to their website. The owner has a TV program and a new magazine. They do mention these other aspects of the business but the website is mainly for the restaurant. Currently they have their menu up, catering/banquet info, cooking school and are selling cook books, aprons, spices, t-shirts, etc. There is also a newsletter signup, a photo gallery and links to just a few other sites. They do not take reservations so an online reservation service is not needed. I am a bit brain dead as I haven't been able to think of too much more that could be added without seeming too cluttered.

Here are a few possible ideas:

Featured Meal/Dish - dish + history/story for the meal/dish &/or occasions the dish would be appropriate for. Currently they only offer minimal recipes and usually try to tie the offered ones into a special that includes a product from their store.

Health/Nutrition - meals that are low calorie/low cholestoral/low fat, just the nutritional contents of meals/food offered, possible nutrition/calorie calculator. I'm not sure this would work as their menu isn't really famous for helthy fare, but showing that there is the option might encourage people to visit who might not orinarily visit and enjoy.

How to Videos/Podcast - how to prepare the meals in video format, normally accompanied by an ad on the same page, generates revenue if people are watching the video.

Basic Desktop Goodies - Wallpaper, Aim Icons, that normal fun stuff. PR city

Cell Phone Alternate Page - Cheap, and adds a lot of value. I think I can put a script on the homepage that detects cel phones, that would go to a phone friendly page with basic directions, contact info, blah blah blah (a basic mini site), for those traveling to the restaurant as a tourist attraction, and on the way, no longer have their computers handy.

So, there you have it. Any ideass, no matter how new or crazy are welcome.

I think you are doing a great job!

And rnorth3's idea of wine pairings is magnificent.

Have you considered a birthday registration? You send an email to the birthday registrant with a discount coupon and a free dessert two weeks before the event.

How about an RSS feed for other Web sites to pick up?

And I'm sure you have thought of a "best feedback" contest, where those who send in feedback - good or bad - get entered in a monthly contest for a free dinner for two.

How about a "Who was spotted last week at [name of restaurant]" feature? Of course, you would need to get a rrelease for the photos, but since you already have a photo gallery...Could make for some fun.

    mocando,

My advice, before you add anything, first make sure you know what your goals are.

I will assume there are two goals right now: 1) New customers, 2) Repeat Business. I know there could be more.

Your note above comes across as the web site will be the primary tactic used to accomplish the goals.

If the content/creative you want to add does not help accomplish these goals, then reconsider adding them until they can be used in conjunction with another activity or tactic.

For instance, start using email marketing to drive repeat business. Then make the changes on the site, which in turn are used as email topics to drive patrons back to the site and possibly returning to the establishment.

Send me an email if you want to talk about more specifics.

    Hope that helps,

A good marketer thinks about customers first. He talks to them, he observes them and he reads their stories to see what they could be interested in. after all the website is theirs.

This will then determine what you can have on the site. You can do away with sections that have no value to the customers and gain new insights on how to come up with fantastic features and sections on the site.

Then that way you can generate new customers, build loyalty and consequently make great profits.

You should also take note that it is not just what features and sections you have on the site but how well they meet the customers needs.

    That is my two cents.
