Website Critique Adwords + Seo

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi All,
Love the Forum!
I could use some feedback on my website. Two things in particular. 1) Go to the section selling dinosaurs. It's the landing page for my adwords campaign. I'm getting a pretty good click through rate but no sales yet. I'm curious if I'm not seeing something that might turn off potential customers.

2) SEO overall. I'm looking to show up when a potential customer searches for "dinosaur toys" horse toys" Science kits etc. I'm not sure I have the meta tags right and I think my code might be quite sloppy which could hurt. So I could use some feedback.

Of course, anyone's overall impression of the site and business would be helpful too.

    Dear Gary!

It’s an interesting project of yours and I’ll be happy to help you with it.

First let’s go with your questions first.

Let’s check your website from the SE point of view.

What’s important is the keywords you use. Keywords – is the most important thing in the whole SEO idea. Let’s look at your code.

Did you know that the more keywords you have the better? And your keywords have to be in the website address, title, description? Now, Title should contain your most important keywords, usually title is about 70 characters length, don't use more. Your description is 250 characters and has to explain shortly but precisely your business idea.
And the keywords tag is 1025 characters. Use phrases as well as separate words.

What did you do? As I understand now, the keywords for your project are: Dinosaurs and Dinosaur Toys. Your keywords Meta tag, though, has these: “Educational Toys, Dinosaurs, Dinosaur Toys, Dinosaur Replicas”. Why so little?

Ok, your Title. “Educational Toys from the Yellow Toy Box Company”. Where is at least one dinosaur in this title? It desperately needs one!

Now, your description is: “Come and Discover our Amazing collection of Dinosaur Toys, Realistic Wild Animal Toys and Collectable Horse Toys as well as other Great Stuff for Kids!.> <”. (What is this, by the way: !.> <”. ?) Not bad, but essentially description is not a part of the wording, but (you may be surprised) a description, the text which is shown in the Search Engine results under the Title of the website. And they are pretty sort there. It has to be something more like: “Dinosaur Toys, Dinosaurs, and other educational toys on sale”

You clearly didn’t use all your opportunities with the meta tags.

Now, let’s check the copy on the Index page.

368 words. Not bad. But your main key word appears on the page only twice. I would expect it to be there at least in 4 places. I didn’t find any ‘Educational Toys’ there. At all. Really, the algorithm is to create good amount of the best keywords and in fill with them the copy.

In general the copy itself is not well organized. I don’t really like complicated stuff like “Downloadable”. Seriously, who wrote the text? I am not a native speaker and I would say in better English and much more SE friendly: Download Free Dinosaur Pictures! Color your own Dinosaur! Put this slogan as a title and a name of the page with that free stuff, and this would be, actually the page where you have to put links for your killer selling stuff. A lot of people will come directly to this page and may become your customers.

The whole website’s copy needs to be organized logically.

Now, listen, what’s with the file names: Dinosaur Main Page.htm. Who told you that you may put empty spaces in the links? It works? Sometimes it does, sometimes not. And it’s definitely not good for search engines. They will index Page.htm. But you need it to be indexed at least as Dinosaur_Main_Page.htm.

Here is just a little critique; trust me you need to do something about the whole thing.

Now, the design is kind of bat out, does not look professionally. You have such a great product! You could create a tropical forest – bright and calling for playing in it. And you went for something almost pale like a moth. And I really think you need some kind of a table (cells) formatting to list the products.

How many people are in the internet are craving to buy dinosaurs? I am not sure. OK, this is poetry. The Ad Words itself is a relatively fair system, but still has a lot of disadvantages. I believe these kinds of systems don’t work for every web-project. For the small ‘just starters’ they turn into just moneysuckers. But since you already have some visitors through Ad Words, let’s see your opportunities.

If I were you I would not expect more than number of those who will boy from your site will exceed 1-3 % of the total amounts of visitors. I will explain why. I have to warn you, the following numbers are not real; you have to conduct a research in order to get real ones. I am just explaining the idea.

Now. A lot of your visitors can not pay. Most likely they are kids. I would say, up to 50%. The rest amount of payable visitors can be roughly divided by 3 into: accidental visitors, just curious visitors and actually interested visitors. Interested visitors are only about 16% from the total amount. And yet not all of them will necessarily buy something from you. But, just for your understanding, that there are only about 15% of people who are potentially interested in buying dinosaurs and still you have to win them. You may have up to 80% of their number, you may have 0. Even taking median we have 7% of all visitors.

    Well, I hope I helped.

    Good Luck!

Very Very Helpful and I'm in the process of making changes as we speak.

Question: As far as putting text copy in the body of a webpage, does that increase the effectiveness for search?

I could add much more copy, descriptions of products etc, if it would help.

And if it does, does the position within the code make a difference, ie: placing the code at the top of the page rather than burried in the body?

    Much thanks
    Gary
