Website Directory Specific Questions...

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I sell prints of my artwork. I have the oportunity to aquire one of 2 website directories to help advertise and hopefully sell my prints. They both recieve about the same about of traffic but one deals specifically with the art related to my own type of art while the other just deals with the issues and ideas of what I paint about. For example... the directories are "all about lizards" and the other is "lizard artwork".

Which would be most benefitial to purchase...realizing a couple of things.....

I would advertise my own art site on the top of all pages of either site as a very large banner.

If I bought the art site, I'd be showing my work next to the competition's art instead of "Dominating" by being the "art" person of the website that they think of when they they think of "lizard artwork".

Would the Lizard artwork site be more benefitial because it's exactly what I do, or would the monopoly of the art on the other site make up for it?

If your goal is to sell prints of your own artwork, I'm not sure I see the value in either of the options you are considering, and here's why:

    1. A "directory" by nature means a collection of options, and if you want to sell your art, why advertise your competition for free? This path could diminish your artwork sales by 75% or more because the focus and intent of the site is not on you and YOUR artwork for sale.

    2. An information site is, well, an information site and not exactly well-positioned to sell your own artwork. When people come to an information-oriented site, they usually do so to learn, not buy. Plus you will be in the position of developing a lot more content for this type of site, simply to support sales which may or may not materialize since the focus is not selling your artwork but rather providing general interest information.

    3. Neither will be particularly well suited to branding you as an artist OR your work

I think your best strategy is to invest your money into having a professional web site built around your name, your brand and your artwork, rather than trying to retool an existing site to meet this need. You will have much more control over the content, advertising and promotion of the site if the topic is central to selling YOUR art, rather than having to advertise an "art information" or "collection of artists" type site.
