Entering The Marketing World

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I am currently a full time student at Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa. Recently I decided to switch my major to marketing and I just need a few pointers on how to reach my bachelor degree sucessfully. I have already researched the marketing profession and I do feel that it would be a good fit for me because I have had good track record in sales in previous jobs. A good majority of my instructors that I have had feel that marketing could possibly be a good career choise. All I need to know is what courses should I enroll in for the remainder of my time in school to recieve my degree, and which colleges or universities should I consider transfering to after i leave Scott Community that are close to my home here in Iowa.

Thanks,
Scott Young

Talk to the University's advising people about your classes and requirements for your major. Or better yet,
contact the admissions office and ask them to send you info about your major and transfer of credits.

Not sure where Bettendorf is, but you have Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa. Both good schools.

    Dear Scott

These are all valid comments, but in response to Amy: It is said that Marketing people are only sales people who can’t sell. But consider this; when I put on my head-hunter hat and look at CV’s sent in to my recruitment buddy, the aspirations of many sales people are not to sales management, but to product management, business development, marketing management and the top job is perceived to be the marketing director who will often have the role of sales and marketing director. (I’ve been a sales director reporting to a Marketing Director)

If you can sell, you can learn marketing and apply it.

If you can do marketing, you might or might not be able to learn to sell.

It depends on your personal make-up, drive and ambition and your ability to be impervious to being told to piss off for 80% of your life!

    Best wishes
