Entrepreneur: Targeting Public Service It Decision Makers

Public school districts (K-12) and libraries have IT professionals that make key decisions for technology development. The plans they execute involve large public infrastructures that have wonderful sales potential. With little to no budget, how would you recommend I “get in touch” with these decision makers and better understand their process? What trade-rags do they consult? Any information from someone with experience with this field would be HIGHLY appreciated! Thanks a million. :)

    Advertising with AASA (American Association of School Administrators)

    AASA now offers "Six Ways to Reach School System Leaders" with public school decision makers who hold the authority to purchase or influence the purchase of your services or products.

    Also, each state has its own public school association, they are just a Google search away.

    You might want to try asking around at www.techrepublic.com as well.

    These folks aren't gaurded by the secret service...simply call up the local school board and start asking. You may try the Capital.

    If you have little to no marketing budget, I hope you still have plenty of working capital to sustain your new business. Many entrepreneurs (myself included) underestimate the real cost of a start-up. The sales cycle for the public sector, ESPECIALLY schools, is excruciatingly long.

    No matter how enthusiastic someone is about your product, you might end up waiting a year to make the sale!

    That being said, just keep the process moving and keep yourself visible. Good luck!
