B2b Banner Ad Placement & Viewing

Posted by Keith on 250 Points
I was recently surfing some consumer B2C news sites and noticed banner ads that were decidedly B2B (and from my very niche industry, in fact). I was doing some web-based research in the days prior to seeing these ads. Are the search terms I used in Google for my research, or the pages I visited, somehow influencing which banner ads I was shown? Any information on this system is appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi keithf,

Absolutely, this technology to serve targeted ads or "ad serving" has been around for years and was made most famous by Double Click.

Google and Yahoo also do this, although differently, with their "contextual" or "content match" advertising.

The "ad serving" technology targets along various criteria. Some of the types of information collected are IP addresses, browser used, operating system, ISP, bandwidth and other business rules set by the client or by reference to information about users stored within cookies on their machines. (Which is probably what happened to you during your prior days searching).

In addition, the cookie information may be used to target ads based on the number of times the user has been exposed to any given message/website.

Google and Yahoo utilize their search technology to serve ads based on website content, the user's geographical location, and other factors.

    I hope that helps.
