How Do I Improve This Website?

Posted by Anonymous on 1500 Points
Greetings friends - those of you who have been members for a few years may recognize this website.
I have asked for your advice in the past and have incorporated it in this site.

I am now talking with my website folks and want to improve this website further.

I have assigned plenty of points to this question because I would like to hear from as many of you as possible.

https://www.bayerfantasia.com/

A few words to explain what it is all about:
- This is a B2B website.
- We manufacture engineered plastics (think tough, not cheap, throwaway stuff) and through this website offer a variety of options for improving the appearance and aesthetics of our plastics.
- It is not a website where a customer can place an order.
- The objective of the website is educational as well as Marketing-oriented. There are visualizations to be found, literature to be accessed and there are means of getting in touch with folks who can answer questions.

So, put yourselves in the shoes of a plastics processor, or an OEM that uses engineered plastics in their products.
Explore the site (hint: click on "color technologies") and let me know:

What do you think of this website overall?
What do you like?
What do you find adds little value?
What do you find irritating?

Thanks in advance for your input.
John

Like most b 2 b websites it is basically a brochure. That's okay if that is all you want. I beleive clients are looking for more now and the web site is a great way to give them what they want and to move them along the sales process.

How about case studies, white papers and a blog where you share the great internal expertise you have gained over the years? Give people ideas for using your service.

First off, you gave us a "hint" to explore your site. If I were a visitor without your "hint" would I be able to find what I am looking for?

Your navigation on your homepage is on the right hand side, then when you enter the site, it goes to the left. This creates an uncomfortable switch for the user. Keep navigation the same throughout, whether right or left.

The flash intro does not do a whole lot for me. It's not graphically pleasing, and it really does not push me into your company. It needs more of a "message" and seems to generic. There is no "call to action."

The top navigation on the homepage does not work well with the alignment of the below graphics. It's not until you reach the secondary pages that layout makes sense. The secondary pages are great. The alignment works well and the flow of navigation is easy to use.

Both the Fantasia logo and the Bayer MaterialScience logos are competing with each other. Which company is the site representing? Are there two companies? Or is Fantasia a product from the Bayer MaterialScience company?

    For Search Engine tips:
    1. Your homepage does not have enough words, the graphics dominate the page and your image-to-copy ratio is to high.
    2. Your alt tags for your images don't match up with your keywords.
    3. Your description does not contain enough keyword weight.
    4. You also have quite a few html errors and css errors. To see the errors, validate your html code here: https://validator.w3.org/ and your css code here: https://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

    Hi John,

It is a beautifully designed site and graphically very pleasing. From a Search Engine Optimization standpoint though, you have a lot of work to do. There is too little copy, your title tags do nothing to help you with ranking for your industry, and the flash loads slowly. On the plus side, you have a good metadescription which will help clients and prospects want to go to your site.

"Imagine the Possibilities" and "Add some Sizzle to Your Style" seem like throwaway lines. What is your USP? What do you do differently than your competitors? Tell me about it, right away, so I am captivated enough to stay on the site.

That's my two cents. I hope it helps you.

    All the Best,
    Holly

I have quite a fast web connection (17Mbs) but the Flash animations come in so slowly that I could have clicked somewhere and gone off without seeing them. I'm looking at a home page with a giant white rectangle in the middle for 7-8 seconds (seems longer)

Can't they speed the thing up?

Alternatively, could they put an still jpg/gif picture in its place and load the Flash animation over the top, so it creates the impression the page is fully loaded while the Flash is still arriving?
