Marketing A Political Group

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am a board member of a very small but passionate group focused on a current provocative political topic. We have little money, but do have a website. Our goal is to spread information, recruit new members, and direct the public to our website. What fundraising events or other marketing strategies would you suggest? We had a state senator of our district speak at one event and it was successful, but we did not get many new members. We have few printed materials, and won't until we can get more funds coming in.

Electronic Mail is for everyone, including those who cannot afford printed materials. Take your events and look at who they are targeted to. If that isn't your target market, or most likely to adopt your cause, then find it. If you are confident it is then gather ideas on what they want.
Say for instance you are talking on controversial environmental issues: Enter to win a hybrid. Friends at a dealership would be priceless... How about a free booklet on how to lower your greenhouse emissions? Include that they will recieve more information on your cause as well.
After you find out what they want and have put in the work to make it available, ask them for their email addresses to send the booklet as they show up to a speech. Now you can also send them an electronic version of printed materials. These printed materials are what will give your prospects more information to reflect on in the comfort of their own home. Have an online sign-up page to top it all off.
This of course will entail a lot of work to gather something they want but it's the most cost effective way, especially if you can do all of the creative yourself. Again, friends who know how if you don't become extremely valuable.

Caveat: I believe there may be special rules to sending bulk email. Check the rules.

    Hope this helps
    Good Luck =]

The crux is that you want people to join your organization. Why should they join (and not simply attend events, etc.)? What's the benefit to them of joining?

Focus on issues that people care about. Start a blog to get an online conversation started.

Your organization is more than about politics - it's about community. Create community. Potlucks. Spaghetti Feeds. Book Clubs. Garage Sales.

I would suggest to join your local Chamber of Commerce and start networking there. They normally have luncheons and meetings for member so you can talk to people and invite them to join your group, these people are normally aware of all the community/political issues.

Also another tool is meetup.com, this site facilitates a way for people with similar interest to meet up locally, it’s a network of self-organized clubs and community groups.

    Good luck!
