What types of advertising can your blog have? Custom banners?

You might want to leverage some of that space for banner exchange as well so that you can further the traffic on your site.

I have a hosting and design firm that will basically implement what I want.

I was hoping for a little more specific direction, or perhaps you could point me to more specific resources. e.g. a primer on types of advertising, common sizes, how to develop a rate card, etc.

    Hi

Types of advertising varies according to the size that you make available for advertisers. Banners usually go accross the middle of the page and is put on top of the blog entry. If you use Google Syndicate then they have an automatic rate system on the amounts of hits - also if you can do some programming then you can develop it yourself. You must also decide whether or not you are going to charge the advertisers per hit or per day that they advertise - the latter ain't recommended due to the fact that advertisers dont like paying for service that they don't receive. You can also put a hit counter on your site and see how many people visit your sit - if you provide these numbers to the advertisers you can adjust your rate according to that.

If you are familiar with Photoshop you can check out the types of web advertisement sizes when you open a new page.

Wikipedia has a list of 'standard' sizes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_banner

This assumes that the banner fits in with your page - there is no problem with creating your own unique size (or shape) that might better fit in with your basic site design.

Normally different pages carry different rates. The precise rate will depend on traffic, subject matter etc so if you can do some competitor research - many e-mags for instance publish advertising rates.

If you were getting sophisticated, then you would set up a system of automatic ad rotation (eg in PHP) counting the number of views, and possibly a click thru counter.
