    I suggest that you click on the link to the Search Questions feature on the right side of this page, then try using the keywords "search engine" or "SEO." You'll discover that your question has been asked AND answered at least a dozen times.

    If you take a look at those old questions, it might help you construct a well-thought inquiry to get the best advice available from this amazing community!

    The search engine crawlers only take into account text (images and flash are ignored) so if you want your site optimized then focus on the HTML text.

    Search engine optimization is a two step process. Firstly you need to identify the search phrases/words that you should optimize. There are good words/phrases and bad words/phrased. There is no point optimizing for a word or a phrase that is rarely used in searches. Likewise there is no point in trying to optimise on words/phrases that have too much competition. There are probably several million sites that use words like free, money, customer. Getting to the top of that pile is an almost impossible task and if you are not on the first two pages of results you will never generate any traffic.

    The trick in picking good words/phrases is to identify words/phrases that are frequently used in searches but are not used on too many competing sites.

    WordTracker is a service that does exactly this. If you type in a generic word like software it will suggest a whole range of related words like Desktop software, software engineering, etc and will then analyse these words/phrases to identify how many times they have been used in searches in the last 60 days and how many competing sites there are.     Now that you know what words/phrase will generate good well-targeted traffic to your website you go to step 2.

    Step 2 involves optimizing your different web pages for the chosen words/phrases. Here there is another industry standard software product that does the job for you, Web Position Gold. It will analyse the web page and suggest changes to the Title, Description and meta tags as well as body text, ALT tags, page size (number of words), word density, etc. Follow the recommendations and you will get a pretty good position near the top.     However the job is never done, this is a continous war as other people all over the world are tying to win the battle to get to the top of the pile for the good words/phrases.

    As an alternative, you might want to buy your way to the top by using pay per click (PPC) such as Overture or Google AdWords.
