How Do I Find An Audience For Music?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hello all! I have a friend that is a Christian and writes her own songs and records in her in-home recording studio. To promote herself she came up with a plan to write, record and produce a CD every month and develop a mailing list of folks who would pay a monthly fee of no less than $10.00. Her initial list was about 200 and has since dwindled to the point where she no longer can do the monthly mailing.

What suggestions do you have for her to promote her music and find her audience?

Burning and mailing CDs isn't what she wants to do. She wants to write and perform music. Why not have her be an iTunes content provider (https://www.apple.com/itunes/contentproviders/) where people are searching for her music can find it? Or, create a website for her CDs, with samples online (she can use Google's Seller program to assist: https://www.google.com/base/help/sellongoogle.html), but only provide digital downloads.

Also, have her build her mailing list by giving away a song a month to her subscribers. It's a natural way to build a listener base.

    Greetings,

An easy way for your friend to get her foot in the door is to make this a win-win situation. Try approaching a Christian organization, like the youth group at a good sized church. Offer to do a concert for their organization where they can collect a good will offering and use the proceeds for anything they want. In exchange your friend can set up a table and have someone selling cd's. Offer to share the stage with other performers.

At the sales table keep pads of paper to build a mailing list.

After a successful event, it will be fairly easy to repeat with another church....

Sales at this type of event are typically 6-8% of those attending. The value will be in the mailing list however.

Additionally, Christian bookstores will sometimes allow a person to perform at their stores. They benefit from the increased traffic at their store.

A third method would be to approach churches and offer to play during their services. After the service make sure she is outside the front doors to shake hands with the worshipers as they leave. Again, have paper available to build that mailing list...

    Good luck.
