Does Our New Hompage Tell You What We Do?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
Greetings!

Our company recently updated our website with a new look and feel.

My question is: Can you tell in the first 10 seconds what we do just from viewing our homepage?

Thank you for taking the time to briefly critique our new homepage:

I looked for exactly 10 seconds...
let me guess... you do multi-language call center work

I waited for several seconds for an image to load which provided no insight as to what you do. The only page element that provided me with any worthwhile information was the "Need an Interpreter Right Now" navigation link but it took a moment to find.

Right now the page does not clearly (or at all) state what it is you do. I Recommend adding a compelling and descriptive value proposition. Perhaps eliminating the image fade-in (which provides no benefit to your sales-effort and is royally distracting to boot) and add a compelling headline to the image may help. The SEO in me says that you should put it in HTML and use a CSS background for the image.

Stating "welcome" in several languages is clever but again, is that what you do?

Additionally, the four columns at the bottom of the page provide a benefit but no context.

I hope my observations & recommendations are helpful.

I could tell what you did - from looking at the title of the page. The picture and content weren't as clear. I think it would help to add something like "real time translation services"

Also the text in green (news) and the text under the picture are hard to read (too small).

    Hope this helps.

I looked for 10 seconds and would assume interpretation services in multiple languages for companies.

However, my initial perception is that you should add more content/text 'above the fold' of the page, to ensure viewers have a better understanding of your services immediately. I had to read through multiple navigation summaries to determine what you actually do - and since the average user only spends about 3-5 seconds on a homepage before deciding whether to continue or leave, they would not be trying as hard as those responding to your question here.

Good luck, and I hope this was helpful

I believe that MIT research shows that 1 to 2 seconds is all you get.

Additionally, it is believed that Google's algorithm factors in the time from the click through to the clicking of the back button on the browser. I subscribe to this theory because it makes sense, and it matches human behavior.

Longer duration of time indicates a compelling, quick-loading page which is relevant to the search query = higher rank.

Under this theory, the opposite is also true.

The artwork is good. You can see what it is about, but dont be afraid to spell out what you do, even if it sounds basic. This is a good service, much needed nowadays!

I could tell in 10 seconds that you deal with languages. The only criticism I have is that your logo needs to be a bit bigger. I feel that the image jumps out at you immediately, and the logo is sitting in the background.
