Business Name

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I am one of the few licensed female plumbers in my area, and have decided to start my own business, and have a few questions, about naming my business. I would obviously like to bring attention to the fact that I am a female plumber, as I believe this is a great niche market, but am having a few conflicting issues with the name. I have thought of using Drain Divas, with a Bold Full service plumbing right under any use of the name. However, any plumbers I know, have stated that people will assume I only do drain cleaning. My thought is that everyone seems to know to call Roto Router for drain cleaning, even though their name notes nothing to do with drain cleaning. Just wondering what the advertising and marketing people think??

    Colleen,

Why do you want to bring attention to the fact you are female? Is it to make women customers more comfortable or is it for the men that you want this known? Or some other reason?

I think it would be useful know your motivation for wanting your sex to be front and center...

I'm not a marketing or advertising person, but as a female, to me the word "diva" conjures up images of someone being high maintenance and hard to get along with.

What about something like The Drain Dame? And then something like Plumbing At Its Finest?

Here's what popped up when I typed in dame in the thesaurus:

    • DAME (noun)
The noun DAME has 2 senses:

    1. informal terms for a (young) woman
    2. a woman of refinement

There's more to what the thesaurus said, so Google Thesaurus and type in "dame" to see what it says. It might help you figure out what your logo, etc., could look like.

    Good luck!

Hi Neil, My reason for wanting the fact that I am female brought to the fore, is that I would like to market towards other women, as I think there is a great market out there to be tapped into. I believe that women will be less intimidated, and more comfortable with a female coming into their home.

Why not take it all the way.

You are woman, hear you roar!

I like the "Princess of Plumbing" or something similar. But how about the tagline being VERY in your face.

Call a man if you want it done. Call a woman if you want it done right. (There are MANY variations on this theme that might be fun)

For the more tame among you...

    Women, Wrenches, and Water

    Hope this sparks some ideas.

Wow, I think you are in a tough spot here! I'm all for you having a female owned business, but you are trying to break into a male oriented business. Both my wife and sister are in the construction industry and have had to prove their worth before they gained acceptance in the area. To be honest, I don't know that I would play up the female side in your name. I would make it more about the quality of service and expertise more so than your gender.

On the flip side, if you are going to push the female side of this, go big or go home. If there is a huge benefit from pushing the female aspect, then do it in a big way. Once you select a name, make a big splash in the area. Do some PR and see if you can get special coverage in local newspapers or on the local TV stations.

    Just my 2 cents!

I think you should really get your message out there that you are a woman, because I know, I (as a husband) would much rather a woman come to my house, when my wife is home, to fix a plumbing problem, than have a male. I'd just feel safer.
